Sucessful Dog Breeding
By: A. Fletcher
Successful dog breeding can be a challenge. Breeding success is achieved through being attentive to little details like, good nutrition, medical knowledge and a willingness to learn about your breed. It matters less when you are breeding your dog for the first time, but if you are an experienced or a well known kennel operator than a failed breeding or the loss of a litter can be a huge disappointment for you
It is mismatched feelings when it comes to breeding, but a successful dog breeding comes with a potentiality to understand and know what it takes to breed your dog
Your dog whether male or female, you as a owner of the dog needs to keep good records on your dog and keep records of the breeding activities as well. Some of the few things are more important in resolving breeding difficulties than knowing your female dog’s medical history and estrus cycle. Start with keeping a folder for your female dog or (dogs) and keep track of dates and noticeable changes in your female dog’s signs of heat. It is also advisable to note some behavioral and medical changes as well. It is important to keep a close working relationship with a veterinarian who can help you more than you truly would understand of your philosophy and goals for breeding.
There are some of the points you need to remember when using a male dog in a mating process. It is scientifically stated that reproductive problems in male dogs seem to be less complicated than in female canines, but in cases when problems do occur they can be difficult to correct. Some of the short list on male dog reproduction aberration is usually to do with anatomical defects of the reproductive organs, or low sperm production or function or infections of the reproductive tract. Hormonal problems in the male dog are less common in the failed breeding equation than in the female
You can also check out Hypothyroidism even if your male dog seems to be least interested in the breeding activity. Veterinarian can check for prostate infections, Brucellosis, anatomical abnormalities such as arthritis of the spine or hips or adhesions at the penis.
In the Female dog, for a successful breeding the timing of the mating has to be right. Hormone levels of the female dog must be evaluated. You have to know her fertility capabilities and for that you can take help of your veterinarian. Breeding cannot take place when the ovulation is delayed because that will decrease the chances of her conception.
Evaluating the health structure for both male and female dog is important. Genetic history and other medical history are determined to have successful breeding for your dog.
Freeman, gives another reason for failed breeding that is a “failure to evaluate the male properly”. Male dog has to be examined well which includes the microscopic semen evaluation for proper numbers, function of the sperm, structure and the assessment for presence of bacterial contamination.
Well, the article shows, a lot of attention given to the medical examination of a male dog, which is important for a successful breeding.
